Buddy is a virtual tutor for children, available in a desktop application and on iOS and Android mobile devices. The company focuses on developing its main product along with supporting services, one of which is the buddy.ai website. This website introduces the product, highlights its benefits, and offers users a trial.
The buddy.ai website launched in September 2022. Initially built on Webflow, the site later faced scalability issues, so the decision was made to rewrite it using Vue, with functional localization and one-time payment capabilities. However, after relaunching on Vue, the client realized they lacked the resources to maintain and further develop the site. This led Buddy to partner with ByteMinds to handle primary tasks, freeing up Buddy’s team for scaling the main product.

TASK DESCRIPTION

ByteMinds’ first task was to audit the buddy.ai website, conducting a front-end review and compiling a list of recommendations for improvements. This audit aimed to identify website issues, create a plan for fixes, suggest refactoring steps, and prepare the site for future scalability. We also developed a roadmap for potential future work, complete with estimates and approximate timelines. 

Based on the audit, we decided to split the work into multiple phases.

In Phase 1, we prioritized critical refactoring tasks that directly impacted site performance, particularly website speed. Less critical issues, as well as new feature implementations, were addressed in Phases 2 and 3.

The work was divided into several phases depending on the criticality of the problems on the current version of the site. Hotfixes and minor features were finalised in the last stage.

Key Project Contributions

In Phase 1, we added server-side rendering to the application using nuxt.js, improving SEO. The API implementation reduced data transfer volume, and we replaced custom routing with Vue-Router within the nuxt.js framework. Additionally, TypeScript was integrated for static type analysis. Together, these changes optimized site performance. 

In Phase 2 and 3, we created new landing pages for each target group, as well as job pages.  For the Careers section, we used  Prismic as a CMS alternative. This phase also included bug fixes, marketing experiments, and refactoring of analytics event tracking.

Performance Gains & Future Migration

After these updates, the site's performance improved by 16 points - a good result, especially given that performance optimization wasn’t the main goal. Currently, the site is preparing to migrate to a new CMS, Umbraco.
